How to choose between Bluestone and Granite

Bluestone and Granite, both are popular building materials recognized for their versatility and durability. They are often used in buildings and landscapes because of their strength and great functionality. Due to a lot of similarities, it becomes a little difficult for many to choose between them. Here in this post, we are listing the differences between Bluestone and Granite for you to pick the best one for your construction project.

        The origin

Bluestone is a type of fine-grained sedimentary rock that appears blue when wet or broken. Though it exists in a variety of colours, Bluestone is primarily composed of mica, feldspar sand, and other minerals.

On the other hand, Granite is an igneous rock made of quartz, feldspar, and other dark-hued minerals. The primary feature of granular texture is how Granite got its name.

        Solidity & Durability

Granite is known for its high load-bearing capacity and durability. It resists weathering and abrasion with ease. Since it is the hardest stone on the planet after diamond, it is perfect for use as outdoor pavers in driveways, walkways, garden pavers, or landscapes. Though Bluestone is not as hard as Granite, it is hard-wearing and durable enough to resist cracking. Bluestone pavers are used as stepping stones, patio pavers, garden paths, walkways, sideways, and more. Granite is denser than Bluestone, yet both are reliable when it comes to durability.

        Installation

Granite being hard is difficult to cut into slabs of the desired size. Their weight makes installation difficult. With Bluestone, cutting them in slabs of desired shapes is possible. They can be installed and transported easily, in comparison to Granite. Let’s be honest. You cannot install or work on Granite pavers and tiles on your own. You would require professional help.

        Appearance & Texture

Bluestone generally comes in shades of grey and blue. They can be easily honed and sanded to achieve desired textures like sawn, flamed, or cleft. Granite comes in multiple colours and shades. They are available in exfoliated, bush-hammered, and flamed textures. The texture of both stones offers good slip resistance. Bluestone and Granite both have a great aesthetic appeal and it gets difficult to choose between the two. However, for a natural and cool appearance of your space, go for Bluestone pavers and tiles. If you are looking forward to creating a robust, sophisticated look, Granite might fit in there.

        Permeability & Maintenance

Almost every natural stone is porous and requires sealing. Granite and Bluestone both are porous and should be sealed to prevent staining from moisture or chemical spills. The maintenance needs of both stones are somewhat similar. However, Granite is a low-maintenance stone whereas Bluestone being slightly more porous needs extra attention in cleaning. Acidic or abrasive cleaners must be avoided to clean both stones.

        Cost-effectiveness

Bluestone costs slightly lesser than Granite. However, the high installation cost and difficulty in cutting Granite add costs in the long run. If both stones are sealed and maintained well, they last longer and do not incur additional expenses.

        Overall

Granite and Bluestone both share quite a lot of similarities. It’s rather difficult to make a choice between them for your property and there is no right or wrong decision. Your decision would perhaps depend on the cost, availability and minor differences which lie in their colours and origin. For the rest, they have a similar kind of durability, porosity, and maintenance needs.
